Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Says Citizens Have Broken the ‘Politics of Fear’ to Defend Democracy

Mumbai : Uddhav Thackeray has strongly backed the ongoing CJP protests, describing those participating in the movement as “an avatar of Lord Vishnu” and praising them for what he called their courage in standing up for democracy and constitutional values.

Speaking in an interview with Sanjay Raut, published in the party’s mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said the protests represented a significant shift in public sentiment, claiming that ordinary citizens from Mumbai to Delhi had overcome fear and were now openly expressing their concerns on the streets.

According to Thackeray, governments may attempt to silence dissent through fear, but such an approach cannot suppress public opinion indefinitely. He alleged that an atmosphere of fear had prevailed for a long time, discouraging people from speaking out against issues affecting them. However, he claimed that the recent protests indicate that citizens are no longer willing to remain silent.

Praising the protesters, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said they had displayed remarkable determination and resilience despite various challenges. Drawing a symbolic comparison from Hindu mythology, he referred to the participants as “an avatar of Lord Vishnu,” suggesting that they had emerged to protect democracy, justice and constitutional principles in difficult times.

Thackeray also asserted that the growing participation in the movement reflected a broader awakening among the public. He said people from different sections of society were joining together not out of political ambition but because they believed it was necessary to safeguard democratic institutions and uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution.

His remarks come amid continuing political debate over the CJP-led protests, which have drawn support as well as criticism from leaders across the political spectrum. While opposition parties have expressed solidarity with several demands raised during the demonstrations, the ruling establishment has maintained its own position on the issue, leading to sharp political exchanges.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief’s comments are expected to further intensify the political discourse surrounding the protests, with his comparison of demonstrators to Lord Vishnu likely to generate both support and criticism.
