New Delhi : Air India has said it has not received the results of post-flight drug screening conducted on the pilots of flight AI2379, amid reports claiming that one of the pilots may have failed the test.

The Phuket-Delhi flight encountered severe turbulence on August 4, reportedly experiencing a sudden drop of around 300 feet. Nearly 20 passengers and crew members were reported to have suffered injuries, with several taken to hospital for medical evaluation.

Air India said the pilots underwent post-flight screening as required under applicable regulations but stressed that the test results had not been shared with the airline. The carrier said it was therefore not in a position to confirm or comment on reports of any failed test.

The airline added that drug testing of crew members is conducted regularly in accordance with civil aviation regulations and said it would continue cooperating with the relevant authorities investigating the incident.

Passengers described the turbulence as a frightening experience, with some reporting that people were thrown around inside the cabin following the sudden movement of the aircraft. The flight ultimately landed safely at Delhi airport.

One passenger approached the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) through the AirSewa portal, alleging that members of his family were injured during the incident. He claimed his 62-year-old mother-in-law suffered a rib injury and suspected spinal injury, while his 64-year-old father-in-law sustained bruising.

Another passenger, Shilpi Jain, also shared her account on social media, saying passengers and cabin crew members were injured during the turbulence. She said she was seated in 23F when the aircraft suddenly dropped.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said passengers who required medical attention were taken to hospital and that most were discharged within the first few hours. He said around 24 passengers experienced medical issues following the incident.

While reports of a pilot failing a drug test have emerged, Air India has not confirmed the claim. The airline’s position remains that the results of the post-flight screening have not been provided to it.

The circumstances surrounding the turbulence and any findings related to the pilots remain subject to assessment by the relevant aviation authorities.
