New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday remembered former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, describing him as an “extraordinary statesman” whose vision, leadership and dedication to public service continue to inspire generations.
Vajpayee, one of India’s most respected political leaders, passed away on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93.
In a post on X, Modi recalled Vajpayee’s lifelong commitment to the nation and said his leadership and efforts made a lasting contribution to India’s development. He highlighted Vajpayee’s focus on good governance and public welfare, saying his words, vision and work continue to guide the country.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister, remembering him as a patriot and statesman who devoted his life to the nation. Shah recalled Vajpayee’s role in strengthening India’s strategic capabilities, including during the nuclear tests and the Kargil War, while also highlighting his emphasis on Antyodaya and good governance.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Vajpayee made a significant contribution to Indian democracy and national development. He recalled the former Prime Minister’s commitment to the principle of “Nation First, Always First” and credited his leadership with advancing India’s strategic strength, economic development and infrastructure.
Vajpayee served as Prime Minister three times. His first tenure in 1996 lasted 13 days. He returned to office in 1998 and served for around 11 months before becoming Prime Minister again in 1999. His final tenure continued until 2004.
In recognition of his immense contribution to the nation, Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2015. His political legacy, parliamentary contributions and emphasis on national service continue to remain an important part of India’s public life.
