New Delh : A police complaint has been filed against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi over Vande Mataram. The complaint was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Shubham Sharma at Delhi’s IP Estate police station on August 16. The complaint is related to the Independence Day program organized at the Congress headquarters on August 15.

The complaint alleges that during the Vande Mataram demonstration, Sonia Gandhi made gestures that seemed to object to the continuation of the song. The complaint also mentions a video of Rahul Gandhi, in which he is allegedly seen saying, “We do not sing Vande Mataram.”

The complainant has demanded an investigation into the matter and registration of an FIR against both the parties. The complaint also mentions legal provisions related to intentionally preventing the singing of the national anthem or disrupting the program. Shubh Sharma has demanded that the police investigate the matter impartially and take action against those responsible.

A statement has been issued by the DCP Central regarding this complaint. The police department said, “The complaint is being investigated regarding the alleged incident that took place while singing Vande Mataram during the Independence Day celebrations organized at the Congress headquarters on August 15, 2026.”

Meanwhile, the Odisha unit of the BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Sunday filed a case against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at the Kharvel Nagar police station for allegedly “insulting” and obstructing the singing of the national anthem during the Independence Day celebrations.

BJP Yuva Morcha state president Abhilash Panda said that the party has demanded action against the Congress leaders for allegedly “insulting” and obstructing the singing of the national anthem. Panda alleged that, “By insulting Vande Mataram and obstructing its singing, they have committed a punishable offence.”

Meanwhile, the Congress has denied the allegation, saying that no attempt was made to stop the national anthem. The party said that Sonia Gandhi was only asking for a chair for Kharge, as he had been standing for some time.
