‘No Question of Leaving Politics’ : TMC Chief Takes Aim at BJP Over SIR, Women’s Welfare and Jadavpur University Unrest
Kolkata : Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has firmly ruled out any immediate retirement from politics, declaring that her political battle against the BJP will continue. Addressing people through a Facebook Live session on Monday, Banerjee said she had no plans to step away from public life and accused the BJP-led government in West Bengal of targeting TMC supporters and creating an atmosphere of political pressure.
She alleged that cases were being registered against people arbitrarily, that party workers and supporters were being subjected to pressure, and that permission for political rallies was sometimes being denied, forcing her party to approach the courts. Banerjee also strongly criticised the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, claiming that a large number of voters had been removed from the electoral list and warning that her party could launch fresh protests if necessary.
She pointed out that the SIR-related matter is currently before the Supreme Court and reiterated her concerns over the impact of the exercise on voters. The TMC chief also stepped up her attack on the BJP over financial assistance for women, alleging that beneficiaries were being excluded by citing eligibility issues and accusing the party of failing to honour promises made before the elections.
Defending her government’s Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, Banerjee said the initiative was aimed at providing financial support and greater economic empowerment to women. She also spoke about the recent unrest at Jadavpur University, accusing the BJP of being responsible for the violence and vandalism on the campus, while stressing that political differences should not become an excuse to disrespect students.
Banerjee’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with the TMC continuing to challenge the BJP on electoral issues, welfare schemes and political developments. Her latest statement makes one message clear: Mamata Banerjee is not stepping away from politics and intends to remain at the centre of the battle against the BJP.
