Mumbai : Mumbai remained on high alert after heavy rain and gusty winds battered the city, uprooting 142 trees and branches and claiming two lives in separate incidents. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its emergency response system as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts more heavy rainfall.
The city recorded 150–170 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, with wind speeds reaching 72–75 kmph. Despite a 4.19-metre high tide, Mumbai witnessed no major waterlogging, and suburban train services continued without disruption.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide monitored the situation from the BMC’s emergency control room and directed all civic officials to remain on high alert, with officers deployed across field locations to tackle any emergency.
Nearly 10,000 BMC personnel, including engineers, pump operators, health workers and emergency response teams, have been stationed across the city to ensure quick response.
The civic body said pre-monsoon preparedness helped minimise disruptions. Over 1.62 lakh trees were surveyed, more than 1.03 lakh trees were pruned, and 648 hazardous trees were removed before the monsoon.Out of 276 complaints related to fallen trees and branches, 142 incidents were confirmed and attended to on priority.
Two fatalities were reported during the day. A 63-year-old man died after a tree branch fell on his shop in Kurla, while an 18-year-old youth was killed after a tree collapsed in Aarey Colony.
A vacant three-storey building near Worli Dairy also collapsed amid the heavy rain. No injuries were reported in the incident.
