From Birthplace to Parliamentary Seat : Vadnagar–Varanasi Yatra Marks Modi’s Birthday

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 76 on September 17, his birthday is being marked by a month-long series of service, cleanliness, blood-donation and public-outreach programmes organised by the BJP across the country. The occasion also marks 25 years since Modi first assumed office as Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001, with the party linking the celebrations to his long public career. At the centre of the programme are twin ‘Seva Sankalp’ bike yatras connecting Vadnagar in Gujarat, his birthplace, with Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency.

The two journeys are being conducted in both directions, with the campaign expected to pass through 10 states, 193 districts, 773 tehsils and around 1,159 villages, covering nearly 40,000 kilometres and involving young participants as Seva Yatris. The Varanasi–Vadnagar journey is being flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while the Vadnagar–Varanasi journey is being launched in Gujarat in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The journeys are scheduled to conclude in Vadnagar on October 7, coinciding with 25 years since Modi became Gujarat Chief Minister.
The ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, running from September 17 to October 17, includes a range of activities such as cleanliness drives, blood-donation camps, health and welfare initiatives, plantation programmes and other community-service events. In Varanasi, the celebrations include the bike yatra and programmes highlighting Modi’s 25-year public journey, while in Gujarat, several events are being organised around his birthday, including large-scale lamp-lighting programmes. The BJP has said the campaign is intended to combine birthday observances with service and public outreach.

From Vadnagar, associated with Modi’s early life, to Varanasi, where he has represented the constituency in the Lok Sabha, the celebrations are connecting two places central to his political journey. Alongside the rallies, party workers and supporters in different parts of the country are participating in blood-donation camps, cleanliness campaigns, prayers, lamp-lighting events and other public activities.

The scale and format of the programmes vary from state to state, with the BJP presenting the month-long campaign as an opportunity to undertake service-oriented activities while marking the Prime Minister’s birthday and 25 years of his public life.
