NewDelhi : The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has come under internal review following its setback in the 2026 Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, where the organisation failed to win any of the four central-panel posts. The results saw ABVP’s Yash Dabas, Riya Chhawdi and Lakshya Raj Singh win the President, Secretary and Joint Secretary positions respectively, while former NSUI member Deepanshu Shokeen, contesting as an independent candidate, secured the Vice-President post with 30,615 votes. The outcome marked the first time since 2015 that NSUI failed to secure a central-panel position at DUSU.

Following the results, reports said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi directed party organisation general secretary K.C. Venugopal to conduct a review of the reasons behind the defeat and recommend any necessary steps. According to reports, the review is expected to examine NSUI’s election strategy, candidate selection, organisational coordination and other decisions taken during the campaign.

The reported scrutiny also involves the roles of NSUI in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar and NSUI president Vinod Jakhar, although reports of any immediate disciplinary action against either leader remain unconfirmed.

A significant aspect of the election was the performance of Deepanshu Shokeen, who had previously been associated with NSUI but contested the Vice-President election as an independent after not receiving the organisation’s ticket. His victory added another dimension to the post-election review, with reports focusing on candidate selection and the handling of internal differences. Shokeen secured the Vice-President post ahead of ABVP’s candidate, while NSUI’s candidate finished behind him.

The election recorded a 40.46% voter turnout, and the results have prompted discussion within Congress and NSUI about their campus strategy and organisational approach. The party’s review is expected to look at how candidates were selected, how the campaign was coordinated and whether internal decisions affected the final outcome. Any action against individual leaders, however, would depend on the findings and recommendations of the internal review.
