Minor Dispute, Tragic End : Rinku Martha Dies After Alleged Attack in Balianta
Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Once celebrated for its peaceful atmosphere, temples and growing urban landscape, Bhubaneswar is increasingly finding itself in the spotlight over disturbing reports of violent incidents, alleged assaults and criminal cases. The latest incident from Balianta, on the outskirts of the Odisha capital, has once again raised serious concerns about public safety and the safety of residents. A young man, Smruti Ranjan Martha, popularly known as Rinku, has died after allegedly being assaulted following a dispute that reportedly began over a minor issue.
The incident took place on October 20 near Laxmi Apartment Square in Patana village under Balianta police station limits. According to the available reports, an argument broke out involving Rinku’s younger brother, Pinku, and some local youths near a shop owned by Ashok Jena. Ashok reportedly objected to the argument and asked them to leave the area, leading to a further confrontation.
The situation allegedly escalated after Ashok’s two sons, Amaresh and Ashish, arrived at the scene. During the ensuing clash, Rinku was allegedly attacked with an iron rod, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
The incident has triggered shock and anger among local residents, particularly as a seemingly minor disagreement allegedly ended in the loss of a young life. Adding a crucial dimension to the investigation, CCTV footage reportedly captured a scuffle involving several people near the location. Police are examining the footage to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the alleged roles of those involved.
One accused, identified as Mahesh Kumar Ray Bahadur, has reportedly been arrested, while the prime accused, Ashok, and three others are reported to be absconding. Rinku’s family has demanded the immediate arrest of the remaining accused and justice for the deceased. The case has also renewed public concern over the need for effective policing, timely intervention in local disputes and stronger measures to prevent violence from escalating.
The Balianta case is now under investigation, and police are expected to rely on CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the facts. As the investigation continues, residents will be watching closely to see whether the remaining suspects are apprehended and the circumstances surrounding Rinku’s death are fully established through the legal process.
