Iran Reacts to Trump’s Midterm Setback : ‘Americans Have Voted Against War’

TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has claimed that American voters have delivered a clear message against war following the Democrats’ sweeping gains in the November 3 midterm elections. Reacting to the election results in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, November 4, Ghalibaf wrote, “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.”

He also issued a warning to the administration of US President Donald Trump, saying that if Washington ignored the will of its people to serve what he described as “international paymasters and blackmailers,” Iran’s response would become a “nightmare” for them.

His remarks came after the Democrats secured projected control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing a major political setback to Trump and his Republican Party. The election campaign was marked by growing public concerns over rising fuel prices, the cost of everyday essentials and the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which began in February 2026.

The conflict has disrupted global energy markets and contributed to economic uncertainty, adding to pressure on American households. Trump also acknowledged that the Iran conflict may have played a role in the Republicans’ electoral losses, although he defended his administration’s actions. Ghalibaf’s remarks reflect Tehran’s interpretation of the election outcome as a rejection of the war, while the results themselves do not establish that every American voter opposed the conflict.
