Andhra Politics Takes a Dramatic Turn : NDA Sweeps Civic Polls, Jagan Faces Major Blow
Andhra Pradesh : A major political shift in Andhra Pradesh’s urban landscape! The TDP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a spectacular victory in the state’s civic elections, dealing a significant blow to former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The ruling alliance has emerged as the dominant force across several urban local bodies, strengthening its political position and delivering a strong electoral message to the opposition.
According to the results, the NDA has won nine of Andhra Pradesh’s 13 municipal corporations.
The alliance has also captured 75 of the 86 municipalities and nagar panchayats, reflecting its strong performance across the state. The results have further reinforced the TDP-led alliance’s position in local politics, while raising questions about the YSRCP’s declining electoral influence.
The biggest spotlight was on the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), where the NDA delivered a commanding performance by securing 98 out of 120 wards.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) emerged as the single largest party with 64 seats, while its alliance partners, the Jana Sena Party (JSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won 26 and eight wards respectively. With this victory, the alliance secured control of the prestigious civic body, and TDP candidate Mukka Sravani won the mayoral post.
For Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP, the Visakhapatnam results came as a major setback. The party managed to win only 13 wards, compared with the 59 seats it had secured in the previous term. The sharp decline highlights the scale of the challenge facing the opposition party in the city. Independent candidates won eight wards, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured one seat.
Following the announcement of the results, TDP, Jana Sena and BJP workers celebrated the alliance’s victory by bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets.
The political setback for the YSRCP was particularly significant in Kadapa district, widely regarded as one of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s traditional strongholds. Out of 279 municipal wards in the district, the YSRCP reportedly managed to win just seven seats, marking a major blow to the party’s performance in an area where it has traditionally enjoyed considerable political influence. The NDA also secured victories unopposed in six municipalities, further strengthening its overall position in the civic polls.
However, the election outcome has not gone unchallenged. The YSRCP has alleged irregularities in the electoral process, raising questions over the conduct of the polls. The allegations have added a political edge to the results, with the opposition questioning the fairness of the election process even as the NDA celebrates its sweeping performance.
Meanwhile, elections could not be conducted in Srikakulam Municipal Corporation and Amadalavalasa Municipality due to cases pending before the court. In another development, TDP rebel candidates won the chairperson posts in Nelimarla and Salur, indicating that internal political dynamics also played a role in some local bodies.
Overall, the civic election results mark a major victory for the TDP-led NDA and a difficult moment for Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP. From Visakhapatnam to Kadapa, the alliance has delivered a strong performance, while the opposition now faces the challenge of rebuilding its political strength at the grassroots level. The results are likely to intensify the political battle in Andhra Pradesh, with both sides preparing to draw their own conclusions from this crucial electoral contest.
