Wangchuk backs the October 2 agitation while stressing that movements must remain independent, self-reliant and focused on electoral transparency.
New Delhi : Climate and education activist Sonam Wangchuk has voiced support for the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed nationwide protest on October 2, targeting concerns surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the electoral process.
Wangchuk said movements seeking greater accountability and transparency in the country’s institutions deserve public backing. However, he indicated that he may not personally join the protest, stressing that public movements should remain independent and should not rely on individual personalities.
He said the strength of a movement lies in its ability to sustain itself, adding that he hoped his presence would not be necessary for the CEC-related campaign.
Wangchuk also highlighted the importance of protecting the credibility of the electoral system, arguing that a transparent and reliable election process is central to the functioning of a democracy.
Alongside the electoral issue, he reiterated the need for the government to honour its commitments to Ladakh, including the long-standing demand for Sixth Schedule status.
The CJP’s proposed agitation is scheduled to begin in Mumbai on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. The planned campaign comes amid continuing debate over electoral-roll revision procedures and demands from various groups for greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission.
