Welcome to Eynhallow Island, one of the world’s most mysterious and fascinating islands.Located between Rousay and Mainland Orkney off Scotland’s northern coast, the tiny 75-hectare island sits amid the sparkling blue waters of the Eynhallow Sound.

According to local folklore, the surrounding waters are home to mermaids mythical half-human, half-fish beings believed to appear during the summer months. While there is no scientific evidence that mermaids exist, these legends have been passed down through generations and continue to attract curious visitors.

The island also has a remarkable history. Historical records suggest that 26 people lived there in 1841, but a devastating outbreak of disease eventually forced the inhabitants to abandon the island. Since 1851, Ainhallow has remained completely uninhabited. Visitors can still find the ruins of a 12th-century church and monastery, along with archaeological remains dating back to prehistoric times.

Today, the island is protected by Scottish heritage authorities and is opened to the public only once each year, usually during the summer, under the supervision of the Orkney Heritage Society. Visitors are allowed to explore the island only through organised trips to preserve its fragile historical and ecological significance.

Adding to its mystery are local beliefs that the island is haunted by supernatural forces. Some residents claim strange disappearances and paranormal activity have occurred there over the centuries. However, these stories remain part of local folklore and have not been verified by historical or scientific evidence.
