From Mausi Maa’s Blessings to Srimandir : Bahuda Yatra Continues Amid Devotion

Puri, Odisha : One of the most cherished and emotional rituals of the Bahuda Yatra unfolded on Puri’s Grand Road as Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra paused at the Mausi Maa Temple in Balagandi to receive the traditional offering of Poda Pitha, a delicacy deeply associated with the Lord’s return journey.

As per centuries-old tradition, the three chariots halted near the temple, where Mausi Maa (Ardhasani) lovingly offered the sacred Poda Pitha to the deities. After the completion of this divine ritual, the chariots resumed their journey towards the Jagannath Temple (Srimandir) amid loud chants of “Jai Jagannath” and the devotion of lakhs of pilgrims.

The offering of Poda Pitha is one of the most significant customs of the Bahuda Yatra, symbolising the affection of an aunt feeding her beloved nephews before they return home. This unique tradition continues to evoke deep emotions among devotees who witness the sacred moment every year.

The Mausi Maa Temple, located at Balagandi on the Grand Road, is dedicated to Goddess Ardhasani, who is revered as the maternal aunt of Lord Jagannath. The deity, carved from black stone, is flanked by two attendant goddesses, Chhaya and Maya, while her face bears a striking resemblance to Goddess Subhadra.

According to temple tradition, the history of this ritual dates back centuries, when a river known as Hati Gadhua once flowed through Balagandi. In ancient times, the Lord’s chariots would halt at this spot before crossing the river on their journey to the Gundicha Temple. It is believed that from that era began the sacred custom of Mausi Maa offering Poda Pitha to Lord Jagannath during His return journey.

Today, this timeless tradition was once again performed with immense devotion and grandeur. As the Holy Trinity accepted the sacred offering and their chariots rolled towards Srimandir, the Grand Road echoed with prayers, devotion, and overwhelming emotion, creating yet another unforgettable chapter in the divine Bahuda Yatra.
