Bandipora, J & K : In a remarkable wildlife rescue operation, Indian Army soldiers rescued a Great Himalayan Bear that had been struggling for survival after a tin container became painfully stuck over its mouth for nearly four days in Khapuri village near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez Valley of Bandipora district.
The distressed bear was noticed in the area, following which Army personnel launched a search operation in coordination with officials from the Wildlife Department. Despite the challenging terrain, the soldiers continued their efforts and eventually located the animal.
After carefully approaching the bear, the rescue team successfully removed the tin container that had become stuck over its mouth, providing the animal much-needed relief.
The timely intervention helped save the life of the bear, a vulnerable species of the Himalayan ecosystem, and highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to protect wildlife in the ecologically fragile Gurez Valley.
Following the rescue, the bear was handed over to the Wildlife Department and shifted to a nearby wildlife veterinary centre for medical care. Officials said the animal underwent a medical examination and is currently under observation.
Wildlife officials said the bear will be released back into its natural habitat after it fully recovers and is declared fit by veterinary experts.
The rescue operation reflects the Indian Army’s efforts to saefeguard not only communities living in the remote border areas but also the wildlife and fragile environment of the Himalayan region.
