Kolkata : Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested in connection with allegations surrounding the hurried cremation of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.

Ghosh, who previously represented Panihati, was reportedly taken into custody from Odisha in connection with a fresh FIR registered at Khardah police station. The case also names Panihati councillor Somnath Dey and local resident Sanjeev Mukherjee, following a complaint filed by the victim’s father.

The complaint alleges that the doctor’s cremation was carried out in undue haste, allegedly without proper family consent and documentation. It further alleges that the body was given priority over others waiting for cremation, raising questions over whether the process was intended to prevent a second autopsy or possible preservation of evidence.

According to police sources, Ghosh is facing allegations including destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The investigation is being conducted by the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate and is separate from the ongoing CBI investigation into the rape and murder case.

The latest development comes after a fresh case was directed to be registered following a complaint by the victim’s family. The allegations surrounding the cremation have added another layer to a case that has continued to draw intense public attention and demands for accountability.

The postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead inside a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. Her death triggered widespread protests across the country, with doctors, students and civil society groups demanding justice, accountability and stronger measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
