Embankment Breach and Rising Waters Trigger Emergency Evacuations as Heavy Rain Continues

Jajpur, Odisha : The flood situation in Jajpur turned critical on Sunday as the Baitarani River rose above its danger level, prompting authorities to evacuate villagers from vulnerable areas.

A portion of the Kani River embankment near Patana village under Tarpada panchayat collapsed early Sunday morning after continuous rainfall weakened the soil. According to local residents, a tree standing along the embankment was swept away overnight, further compromising the structure.

At around 5 a.m., a nearly 30-foot-long and 15-foot-wide section of the embankment gave way, allowing floodwaters to surge into the surrounding area.

Officials from the Water Resources Department reached the spot and launched emergency repair and restoration work. However, persistent rainfall has made the operation difficult.

As water levels continued to rise, Fire Services personnel moved villagers to safer locations, particularly along vulnerable stretches of the Baitarani embankment.

At around 7 a.m., the Baitarani was flowing at 18.38 metres, marginally above its 18.33-metre danger mark. With rainfall continuing, authorities remain alert to the possibility of further flooding in low-lying areas.

The situation remains closely monitored as emergency teams work to strengthen the damaged embankment and protect nearby communities.
