Punjab Polls: BJP Turns to AAP’s Former ‘Data Master’ Sandeep Pathak to Crack the State’s Election Code
Chandigarh, Punjab : The BJP is gearing up for the next Punjab Assembly election with an unusual strategic weapon Sandeep Pathak, the man widely associated with AAP’s data-driven election strategy and its stunning 2022 Punjab victory. The BJP has reportedly assigned Pathak a key role alongside senior leader Satish Poonia, as the party looks to strengthen its organisation and take on the ruling AAP in the upcoming electoral battle.
Pathak, who joined the BJP in April 2026 along with several AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, knows Punjab’s political landscape from the inside and is credited with playing a crucial role in AAP’s landslide victory in the 2022 Assembly polls, when the party won 92 of the state’s 117 seats.
A former IIT Delhi professor and researcher who has also worked as a research associate at Oxford University and MIT, Pathak built his reputation through extensive ground-level research, booth-wise surveys, constituency data and meticulous micro-management. After AAP’s disappointing performance in the 2017 Punjab election, he was given responsibility for building the party’s organisation in the state and reportedly spent years studying political trends, voter behaviour and local-level networks before helping shape the strategy that delivered a historic victory in 2022.
His political skills were also utilised during the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, where he worked alongside election strategist Prashant Kishor on AAP’s campaign. Known in political circles as a “silent mastermind” and “Chanakya”, Pathak’s move to the BJP is particularly significant because he is familiar with the organisational methods and electoral strategies that helped AAP dominate Punjab.
Now, the BJP appears determined to use that experience to challenge the very party whose rise he once helped engineer. Pathak will work alongside Satish Poonia, another experienced BJP organisational strategist known for his focus on booth-level management, campaign coordination and war-room operations.
With the Punjab Assembly election expected around February-March next year, the BJP’s newly assembled strategic team has only a few months to translate data, grassroots networks and micro-management into electoral gains. The big question now is whether the man who once helped AAP unlock Punjab’s political code can help the BJP crack it in 2027.
