Scientists are still working to determine exactly what triggered the catastrophe, but videos circulating on Chinese social media reportedly show a large section of glacier breaking away from a mountain and plunging into a river, raising questions about a possible link between glacial collapse and the sudden flooding.
With communication networks disrupted and several affected areas difficult to reach, rescue operations remain a race against time as anxious families continue waiting for news of their loved ones.
