120-day deadline to submit the academy’s blueprint

NEW DELHI : In a major step aimed at strengthening America’s future space capabilities, US President Donald Trump has ordered the creation of a commission to design the country’s first-ever American Space Academy, an institution envisioned to train a new generation of highly skilled service members, engineers and civilian space operators for future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Addressing a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Trump said the proposed institution would be called the US Space Academy and should stand alongside America’s prestigious service academies in terms of leadership, discipline and public service. The academy, which is expected to be led by NASA, will combine advanced technical education with rigorous training in leadership, discipline and national service, preparing students for the increasingly complex demands of America’s expanding space programme.
Under an executive order signed by Trump, a special commission chaired by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will develop a comprehensive blueprint for the institution. The commission has been given 120 days to submit recommendations covering the academy’s curriculum, governance structure, admission requirements, permanent location, postgraduate service obligations and operating regulations. NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson will serve as the commission’s executive director. The panel will also examine the possibility of launching pilot programmes, establishing partnerships and addressing the legal and implementation framework required to make the academy operational.
The proposed institution is intended to create a highly trained workforce capable of supporting America’s ambitions beyond Earth, particularly as the country prepares for future lunar exploration and eventual missions to Mars. Trump stressed that the academy should have the stature and standards of the nation’s established service academies, signalling an ambition to create a specialised institution where space science, engineering, technology, leadership and public service come together to build the next generation of America’s space workforce.
