Nepal Seeks Global Climate Compensation as Devastating Disasters Intensify
Kathmandu : As Nepal grapples with the devastating consequences of extreme weather events and climate-related disasters, the government has stepped up its appeal to the international community for financial assistance and compensation through global climate-finance mechanisms, arguing that a country that has contributed relatively little to global climate change is being forced to bear a disproportionately heavy burden.
Nepal’s leaders have highlighted the growing destruction caused by floods, landslides and other climate-driven disasters, warning that vulnerable communities are facing severe losses to lives, homes, infrastructure, agriculture and livelihoods.
Against this backdrop, the Nepal government has called for stronger international support under global climate-finance frameworks, including mechanisms aimed at addressing loss and damage suffered by climate-vulnerable nations. Nepalese leaders have stressed that the country should not be left to shoulder the enormous economic and social costs of a crisis it did not create, pointing to the wider injustice faced by developing and mountainous nations on the front lines of a rapidly changing climate.
They argue that while wealthier countries have historically been responsible for a much larger share of global greenhouse-gas emissions, nations such as Nepal are increasingly experiencing the harshest consequences of rising temperatures and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
The appeal for climate compensation therefore goes beyond immediate disaster relief, with Kathmandu seeking long-term financial resources to rebuild damaged infrastructure, strengthen disaster preparedness, protect vulnerable communities and develop greater resilience against future climate shocks.
Nepal’s demand also reflects a broader call from climate-vulnerable countries for greater accountability, solidarity and equitable access to international climate finance, as extreme weather events continue to threaten development gains and deepen economic hardships. Nepal’s message to the world is clear: those least responsible for the climate crisis should not be left to pay the highest price for it.
