From Scorching Heat to Rain Havoc : Odisha Faces a Sudden Weather Twist
Bhubaneswar : Just when Odisha was struggling with scorching heat and unbearable humidity, a fresh weather threat is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, raising fears of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the state. A developing low-pressure system is expected to influence weather conditions over Odisha, with the system likely to move west-northwestward and bring widespread rainfall to coastal, northern and interior parts of the state.
As the system draws closer, several areas could witness intense spells of rain, while some places may receive very heavy rainfall within a 24-hour period, increasing the risk of waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas and disruption to road traffic and daily life.
The changing weather has also triggered concern ahead of the upcoming festive and puja season, as prolonged rain could affect idol-making, decorations, local markets and the businesses of small traders who depend heavily on the festive rush. Coastal and northern Odisha could experience the initial impact, while the weather system may gradually influence central, southern and interior districts as it moves inland.
Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds could further add to the difficulties, particularly in vulnerable areas. Adding to the concern, another low-pressure system is reportedly being closely watched for the September 17–20 period, raising the possibility of another spell of unsettled weather during the festive season.
For millions of residents, the expected rain may provide much-needed relief from the recent heat, but the intensity and duration of rainfall could create fresh challenges if the system strengthens. Authorities and residents are therefore expected to remain vigilant, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas, while people are advised to follow updates and warnings issued by the official weather authorities.
