For 15 long years, an entire library remained hidden behind a fake wall waiting silently for its owner to return. Amid the devastation of war, a remarkable story has emerged from Homs, Syria, where a priceless collection of books was recently rediscovered almost exactly as it had been left years ago. Around 2011–12, as the Syrian civil war began, a man identified as Abu Bilal built a false wall inside his home and concealed his valuable collection of books behind it to protect them from the destruction and chaos of the conflict.
He later left Syria for Kuwait, holding on to the hope that one day he would return to his home and recover the collection he had carefully protected. After years of waiting, the opportunity to return came in 2024, following the fall of then-President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Moscow and was granted asylum by Russia on humanitarian grounds, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
Back in Homs, Abu Bilal eventually returned to his old home and broke through the concealed wall. What he found behind it left him deeply emotional his extensive collection of books had survived nearly 15 years in hiding. The emotional moment was captured on camera by his son, Bilal Alon, and later shared online.
As the wall came down, dust filled the room, and Abu Bilal slowly looked inside to see his treasured books still there. Overwhelmed with relief, he reportedly said, “Thank God, everything is fine.” The discovery was even more significant because the hidden space also contained money that the family had stored away. Removing a cardboard covering, Abu Bilal reportedly said, “We also hid money here.”
He also recovered his prayer beads and certificates connected to years of religious study. Seeing his cherished books largely intact after 15 years was an emotional homecoming for Abu Bilal. Reflecting on his return, he said, “God has blessed us and brought us back to our homeland.” What was recovered behind that wall was more than just a collection of books it was a piece of Abu Bilal’s past, his memories, his faith and a connection to the homeland he had been forced to leave.
After years of war and separation, the hidden library became a powerful symbol of hope, resilience and the enduring bond between people and the places they call home.
