New Delhi : India, Brazil and South Africa have called for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council while expressing concern over the impact of conflicts on energy and food security in the Global South.
The issue was discussed at the IBSA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated in the meeting with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The three countries reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter, international law and a stronger multilateral system, and backed reforms aimed at making the Security Council more democratic, representative and reflective of contemporary realities.
The IBSA ministers strongly condemned the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, and reiterated their opposition to terrorism and their commitment to zero tolerance towards the menace.
The grouping also highlighted concerns over the spillover effects of conflicts on developing economies, including disruptions to energy and food supplies, inflation and fiscal pressures. It called for balanced and mutually beneficial trade arrangements to promote inclusive growth and greater economic resilience.
On technology, the ministers backed universal and meaningful connectivity and greater deployment of digital infrastructure. They also recognised the potential of artificial intelligence to contribute to economic growth and sustainable development.
The meeting further discussed climate action, renewable energy and sustainable development. IBSA supported efforts to expand renewable energy capacity in the Global South, improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable fuels, including biofuels, biogases and low emission hydrogen.
The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to empowering women and removing social and economic barriers affecting women and girls. The meeting provided a platform for India, Brazil and South Africa to coordinate positions on global governance, development and security issues at the UNGA.
