Sikkim : Heavy rain turned terrifying in Sikkim as a massive landslide suddenly struck Rimbi village in Gyalshing district, sending a huge wave of mud, rocks and debris crashing into the residential area. More than 30 houses and government quarters have reportedly been affected, with several structures badly damaged and some reportedly destroyed.

The sudden collapse of the hillside sparked panic among residents, while authorities rushed to assess the damage and move vulnerable families to safer locations. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far, but with heavy rainfall continuing, fears of further landslides remain high across the region.

A major landslide struck Rimbi village in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district late on September 24 amid heavy to very heavy rainfall, triggering panic among residents as huge quantities of mud, rocks, soil and debris came crashing down the hillside into the settlement. More than 30 houses and government quarters have reportedly been affected by the landslide, with several structures suffering severe damage and some reportedly being completely destroyed.

Government accommodation belonging to the Electricity Department was also impacted in the incident. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported so far, providing some relief amid the scale of the destruction. As a precautionary measure, families living in vulnerable locations have been moved to safer areas, while the local administration continues to assess the damage and monitor the situation.

Rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts are being closely supervised, with officials maintaining heightened vigilance because of the continuing rainfall and the possibility of additional landslides. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has expressed concern over the situation and said that ensuring the safety of people living in the affected areas remains the government’s highest priority.

Authorities have also directed local officials to remain on high alert and keep a continuous watch on vulnerable zones. The Rimbi area has witnessed landslide-related damage in the past, affecting homes, roads and other public infrastructure, while relief camps were reportedly arranged earlier for vulnerable families in Rimbi and Singlitam. With rainfall continuing across parts of Sikkim, residents have been urged to remain cautious, avoid landslide-prone areas and strictly follow safety advisories issued by the administration.

Officials are continuing to assess the ground situation as concerns remain over further slope failures in the coming hours.
