New Delhi: India and the United Kingdom are set to usher in a new era of economic cooperation as the landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) comes into force on July 15, promising major benefits for businesses and consumers in both countries.

From cheaper British cars, Scotch whisky, apparel, and footwear in India to duty-free access for 90% of Indian exports to the UK, the agreement is expected to significantly boost bilateral trade, attract fresh investments, create employment opportunities, and strengthen one of the world’s fastest-growing strategic partnerships.

Touted as one of India’s most ambitious trade deals in recent years, the FTA is projected to double two-way trade to $120 billion by 2030, opening new avenues across manufacturing, technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, financial services, and clean energy.

Under the landmark agreement, 90% of Indian goods exported to the UK will enjoy zero tariffs, giving Indian exporters greater access to one of the world’s largest markets. In return, 99% of British products will enter India at an average tariff of just 3%, making several UK-made products significantly more affordable for Indian consumers.

With reduced import duties, popular British products such as luxury cars, Scotch whisky, apparel, and footwear are expected to become cheaper in India after the agreement takes effect. Industry experts believe the tariff reductions will boost consumer demand while encouraging greater investment and trade between the two countries.

The FTA is projected to double bilateral trade to nearly $120 billion by 2030, creating new opportunities across sectors including manufacturing, technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture, financial services, and clean energy. The agreement was finalized after nearly three years of negotiations spanning 14 rounds.

It was signed on July 24, 2025, by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Businesses, exporters, importers, and trade authorities in both countries now have less than a month to complete operational preparations before the agreement becomes effective.

Announcing the implementation date, UK High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron said on X that the FTA will officially come into force on July 15, describing it as a historic milestone in India-UK relations that will unlock fresh economic opportunities and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The India-UK FTA is widely regarded as one of India’s most significant trade agreements in recent years, promising to boost exports, create jobs, attract investments, and accelerate economic growth for both countries.
