New Delhi: Dhaka Requests India to Hand Over Former Minister Sentenced to DeathBangladesh has formally requested India to extradite former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who reportedly left the country during the political upheaval and mass protests of 2024 that ultimately led to the collapse of the then government.
According to Bangladeshi authorities, Kamal has been sentenced to death by a tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity. The government alleges that he played a significant role in actions linked to violence during the political unrest. Officials in Dhaka have now initiated formal efforts to secure his return through the extradition process.
The extradition request is part of Bangladesh’s broader campaign to bring back individuals who fled the country following the 2024 political crisis. The government has urged India to respond to pending extradition requests involving several other fugitives who are believed to be outside Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi officials have also reiterated that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would face legal proceedings if she returns to the country or voluntarily surrenders before the authorities. The government maintains that legal action will proceed in accordance with the country’s judicial process. The latest development comes as Bangladesh continues investigations and prosecutions related to the events surrounding the 2024 uprising. Authorities say those accused of serious offences will be brought to justice through legal mechanisms.
As of now, India has not publicly responded to the extradition request for Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal or the other pending requests submitted by Bangladesh. Any extradition would be subject to the legal provisions, diplomatic procedures, and applicable agreements between the two countries.
