Amaravati, Maharashtra : It was supposed to be an ordinary journey some travelling with a sacred Durga idol, others heading home after a long journey but Friday turned into a day of unimaginable grief for families in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. In two separate road accidents, at least 11 people lost their lives, while several others were injured, leaving behind shattered families and painful questions about road safety and the circumstances that led to the crashes.
In Maharashtra’s Amravati district, tragedy struck on the Samruddhi Expressway when a speeding truck reportedly rammed into a pickup vehicle carrying people travelling with a Durga idol. The collision occurred near the Dhamangaon Railway Station area, and the impact was so severe that the pickup and its attached trolley were badly damaged. Seven people were reported dead, while around 18–19 others were injured and taken to hospitals in Wardha for treatment.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the crash and began removing the injured and recovering those trapped in the damaged vehicle. The truck driver was reportedly detained, and authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the collision.
The tragedy was equally heartbreaking in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district, where a Volvo AC bus travelling from Delhi towards Darbhanga in Bihar met with a serious accident on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway near the Amberpur toll plaza. According to reports, the bus collided with a trailer while attempting to overtake. The force of the impact severely damaged the left side of the bus, leaving passengers trapped and triggering an immediate rescue operation. Four passengers were reported dead, while others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities.
Police and rescue personnel reached the scene and worked to evacuate the injured from the wreckage.
A preliminary report indicated that the bus may have been travelling at a high speed and that the driver may have dozed off, but the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities will determine the circumstances after examining the accident scene and other available evidence.
Two separate highways, two journeys that ended in tragedy, and 11 families now facing an unbearable loss. Behind every number is a person a loved one, a family member, a friend whose absence will be felt long after the wreckage is cleared from the roads. The accidents once again underline the importance of cautious driving, responsible overtaking, proper traffic management and immediate priority for road safety.
As investigations continue in both states, the focus remains on the injured and on understanding how such devastating crashes occurred, so that similar tragedies can be prevented in the future.
