Amritsar, Punjab : In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Rural Police have dismantled an alleged illegal arms and explosives supply network with the arrest of one accused and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, live cartridges and two hand grenades.

According to police, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused was allegedly linked to foreign based smugglers and was involved in procuring illegal weapons.

An FIR has been registered at Police Station Gharinda in Amritsar under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act.

Police said further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and establish its backward and forward linkages, including the sources and intended recipients of the illegal weapons and explosives.

The operation comes as part of intensified efforts by Punjab Police to curb illegal arms trafficking, organised criminal networks and the illicit supply of weapons and explosives.

Officials said strict vigil would continue against individuals and networks involved in the illegal procurement transportation and supply of arms and ammunition.
