From Rescue to Recovery : Nandankanan’s Orangutans Getting Healthier Every Day

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : A wave of happiness has arrived at Nandankanan Zoological Park as the rescued orangutans continue to show encouraging signs of recovery. After going through a difficult phase, the animals are now reportedly responding well to care and gradually adapting to Odisha’s climate and environment. Their health condition has improved, and their weight has also increased, bringing relief and joy to the teams caring for them.

The orangutans are being treated with special attention, almost like young children, with round-the-clock monitoring of their health, food intake and weight. Special veterinary experts from Mysuru have also been involved in their treatment and care, while keepers and veterinary teams are closely observing their behaviour and overall condition. Regular health and weight assessments are being conducted to ensure that their recovery continues smoothly.

Meanwhile, authorities are also working to determine the exact origin of the rescued orangutans. DNA testing is planned to help establish more information about their genetic identity and possible country of origin. For this, officials have reportedly contacted the Geological Survey of India (GSI), and samples are expected to be collected and sent for examination soon.

Once the DNA analysis is completed, the findings could provide greater clarity about where the orangutans came from, and the relevant information will be shared with the Government of India. The development comes as a major relief after the animals were rescued and brought to Nandankanan, where they have remained under close observation and specialised care.

Adding to the attention around their recovery, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida is scheduled to visit Nandankanan and meet the rescued orangutans, while receiving an update from officials about their health and ongoing treatment.

For animal lovers and conservation teams, the improvement in the orangutans’ health is a deeply encouraging sign, as every increase in weight, every improvement in their condition and every step toward adapting to their new surroundings represents another hopeful chapter in their journey toward recovery.
