Good news for central government employees and pensioners
The Union Cabinet has reportedly approved a 3% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA), raising it from 60% to 63% of basic pay. The revision, linked to the July 2026 adjustment, is expected to benefit more than 55 lakh central government employees and around 69 lakh pensioners. The increase is aimed at helping employees and retirees cope with rising living costs and inflation.
How much more will employees receive every month ?
The additional amount will depend on an employee’s basic salary. For example, an employee with a basic pay of ₹18,000 could receive an additional ₹540 per month. Those with a basic pay of ₹25,000 would get ₹750 extra, while employees earning ₹50,000 as basic pay could receive ₹1,500 more. For those with a basic salary of ₹1 lakh, the monthly increase could be ₹3,000. These figures represent the additional DA before other salary components and deductions are considered.
What is Dearness Allowance (DA) ?
DA is an additional payment provided to government employees to help offset the impact of inflation on their purchasing power. It is calculated as a percentage of basic pay and is generally revised twice a year. Pensioners receive a corresponding benefit known as Dearness Relief (DR). Depending on the officially notified effective date and payment rules, eligible beneficiaries may also receive arrears for the applicable period.
The reported 3% hike could provide additional financial relief to millions of central government employees and pensioners. The actual increase in take-home salary will vary according to basic pay, applicable allowances and deductions.
