Srinagar, J & K : National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah has challenged party leader Aga Ruhullah Mehdi to resign from the National Conference and contest elections independently, saying that the electoral support enjoyed by candidates comes from the party’s organisational strength and support base.

Abdullah, in a pointed response to Ruhullah, suggested that he should test his individual popularity by contesting an election without the backing of the National Conference.

The remarks come amid differences within the party over political issues and the functioning of the organisation. Abdullah’s challenge has added a new dimension to the ongoing debate, with the veteran leader asserting that political support cannot be separated from the party platform.

The statement is likely to draw further attention to the differences between the two leaders and could intensify discussions within the National Conference over internal unity, leadership and the party’s political direction in Jammu and Kashmir.
