New Delhi : Several prominent leaders of the INDIA bloc on Sunday joined a major opposition mobilisation in the national capital under the banner of ‘Chalo Dilli’, raising concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The march, led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, began from Minto Road towards Ramlila Maidan, where opposition leaders and workers were scheduled to participate in a mega rally.
Among the prominent leaders present were Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, besides several other opposition representatives.
RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha said the rally was not confined to the issue of the Chief Election Commissioner but was intended to convey a wider message to those whom the opposition believes influence the functioning of democratic institutions. He described the gathering as a people’s rally and said its message should reach citizens across the country.
Congress leader Sachin Pilot asserted that the Chief Election Commissioner would have to go, claiming that the opposition enjoyed public support in its demand for free and fair elections. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also said that a large number of people had assembled in Delhi to convey their concerns to citizens across the country.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Kapil Sibal described the mobilisation as a significant political moment, while opposition leaders projected the rally as a collective effort to defend democratic values and electoral integrity.
The ‘Chalo Dilli’ mobilisation comes amid continuing political differences between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the Election Commission’s functioning and the Special Intensive Revision exercise.
