New Delhi : India’s Kumkum Mohod created history at the Asian Games by winning the country’s first ever individual gold medal in recurve archery.
Mohod defeated South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a hard fought final to claim the historic title.
The victory also marked her third medal of the Games and second gold, after she earlier helped India win gold in the women’s recurve team event. She also secured a silver in the mixed team competition.
Mohod entered the individual final after a strong knockout campaign. She stunned top seed Kang Chae young of South Korea in the quarterfinal before defeating China’s Jingyi Zhu 6-2 in the semifinal.
The semifinal victory also made Mohod the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games individual recurve archery final.
The final against Oh Yejin proved to be a closely contested affair. Mohod fell behind 1-3 early on but fought back strongly, winning the third set to level the contest at 3-3.
She then produced another determined performance to overcome her Korean opponent and secure the historic gold for India.
With the triumph, Mohod has added another landmark chapter to India’s growing success in archery at the Asian Games.
