Gopalpur to Kalingapatnam on Weather Watch as Depression Nears Land

Bhubaneswar,Odisha : The weather situation is turning increasingly serious along the Odisha Andhra Pradesh coast as a Deep Depression over the Bay of Bengal continues its steady movement towards land, bringing heavy rainfall to several parts of South Odisha. The Deep Depression, currently active over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, has moved westward at around 12 kmph during the past six hours and is expected to continue moving in a west-northwestward direction.

According to the latest position, the system was located approximately 70 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 150 km south of Gopalpur in Odisha, 230 km south-southwest of Puri and 150 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam. As the system moves closer to the coastline, its influence is already being felt across South Odisha, where several areas are witnessing heavy rainfall and unsettled weather conditions. The developing system has raised concerns over further spells of intense rain in southern and coastal districts as it approaches the shoreline.

The Deep Depression is expected to maintain its west-northwestward movement and may cross the coast by tonight, most likely near Kalingapatnam, along the coastal belt between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur. The expected landfall region includes parts of north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha, making the coming hours particularly important for residents living in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas. With the system gradually approaching land, weather conditions could remain highly active, with periods of heavy to very heavy rainfall possible in affected areas.

The movement of the system is being closely watched as changing wind and rainfall patterns could create difficult conditions in several southern districts. Gopalpur, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Malkangiri and other parts of southern Odisha may remain particularly vulnerable to intense rainfall and associated weather impacts, depending on the system’s exact track and intensity. Waterlogging in low-lying areas, temporary disruption to road connectivity and localized flooding could become concerns in areas receiving persistent heavy rain. Residents are advised to remain alert, closely follow official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged or vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall.

The Deep Depression’s proximity to the Odisha coast also means that weather conditions may change rapidly over the next several hours. The system’s continued movement towards the Kalingapatnam–Gopalpur sector is being monitored carefully, while rainfall activity across South Odisha is expected to remain significant as the circulation moves closer to the coast. Authorities and disaster-management teams are keeping a close watch on vulnerable locations, while residents are being urged to exercise caution as the system makes its way towards land.

With the Deep Depression now steadily closing in on the coast, South Odisha remains under a close weather watch, and the next few hours could be crucial for determining the intensity and geographical spread of rainfall.
