‘No Fracture or Dislocation’ : Suvendu Adhikari Presents Medical Report on Mamata’s Injury

Kolkata: The political controversy surrounding former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign has resurfaced after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari presented a medical report that he claims shows no evidence of a fracture or dislocation. Speaking at a press conference at Nabanna on Saturday, Adhikari displayed a medical report dated March 11, 2021, which he said was issued by the Department of Radiodiagnosis at the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences. According to his interpretation, the report recorded no evidence of a fracture or dislocation in Banerjee’s leg.

Adhikari also announced that the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would investigate the matter. He said that since the Model Code of Conduct is currently in force, he would not disclose further details at this stage and that more information would be shared after the code comes to an end. The controversy dates back to March 10, 2021, when Banerjee, who was contesting the Assembly election from Nandigram, sustained injuries while campaigning in the constituency.

Banerjee had alleged that some people pushed her, causing injuries to her leg and other parts of her body. She was subsequently taken to Kolkata and admitted to a hospital for treatment. Medical updates released at the time described injuries to her leg and ankle. The incident also drew the attention of the Election Commission of India, which sought reports on the circumstances surrounding her injury.

A report submitted to the Commission in March 2021 reportedly described the incident as accidental rather than a planned attack. Adhikari’s latest claims have brought renewed attention to the medical records and the circumstances of the 2021 incident. However, the report he displayed and his interpretation of its findings do not, by themselves, establish the full nature or extent of Banerjee’s injuries. The proposed CID investigation is expected to examine the matter further, while the renewed political dispute has once again placed the events of the 2021 Nandigram campaign in the spotlight.
