WhatsApp’s Free Business Messaging Era Changes ! Here’s Who Will Actually Pay From October 1
New Delhi : WhatsApp users have been receiving reports that the platform will no longer remain free and that people may have to pay to send messages. However, the actual change announced by Meta is specifically related to the WhatsApp Business Platform, not ordinary personal WhatsApp accounts.
From October 1, 2026, Meta has introduced a new pricing structure under which businesses in India will get 1,000 free service messages per business phone number every month, after which additional service messages will attract a per-message charge. The new rule applies to businesses using WhatsApp Business Platform either directly or through solution providers.
Under the revised system, service messages typically non-template replies sent by customer-service representatives or third-party AI systems after a customer contacts a business are no longer unlimited and free. Once the monthly free quota of 1,000 service messages is exhausted, businesses in India will be charged ₹0.115 per delivered service message, according to the current pricing information. Meta is also charging for certain utility messages sent during an active 24-hour customer-service window, which had previously been free under the earlier arrangement. The utility and authentication rate for India is also ₹0.115 per delivered message, while the marketing-message rate remains ₹0.8631 per delivered message.
The change means that companies that use WhatsApp extensively for customer support, order-related communication, service queries and automated responses may now have additional messaging costs. Meta Business Agent, its AI-powered business messaging system, has a separate token-based pricing structure, with Meta charging $2 per million tokens processed. However, conversations that begin when a customer clicks a business advertisement on WhatsApp continue to receive a free messaging window, although separate AI-related charges can still apply if Meta Business Agent handles the conversation.
Meta had also warned businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform through solution providers or direct integrations to keep a valid payment method on their accounts. Businesses without a payment method configured could have their service messages stopped from being delivered once the new charges came into effect.
For ordinary WhatsApp users, however, there is no new requirement to pay for personal chats, calls or everyday WhatsApp use under this change. The new pricing is aimed at businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform. In other words, the headline that “WhatsApp has become paid for everyone” is misleading.
The major change is that businesses will now have to account for additional costs when they exceed the free service-message allowance or use chargeable business messaging categories. As Meta continues to expand WhatsApp’s business and AI services, companies will need to reassess their customer-support and messaging budgets under the new pricing structure.
