Family Accused of Brutally Killing Daughter for Marrying Against Their Wishes

Faridkot, Punjab : A shocking case of suspected honour killing has emerged from Punjab’s Faridkot district, where a 20-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her own family for marrying a man of her choice. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and once again highlighted the persistent issue of honour-based violence in the country.

The victim, Mehakpreet Kaur, had reportedly married Jagdeep Singh, a young man from her village, around two-and-a-half months ago.

According to preliminary police investigations, the marriage was against the wishes of her family, who strongly opposed the relationship. Following the marriage, the couple reportedly left their village and started living in Bathinda after facing threats and opposition from relatives.

Police said the woman’s family later contacted the couple, assuring them that they wanted to reconcile and inviting them back to the village. Trusting their assurances, Mehakpreet and Jagdeep returned to Burj Harika village on Monday.

Investigators allege that once the couple arrived, Mehakpreet’s family attacked her with sharp-edged weapons. Jagdeep reportedly managed to escape from the scene, but Mehakpreet sustained fatal injuries. After the killing, the accused allegedly dumped her body in an agricultural field near the Amritsar-Bathinda National Highway in the Kotkapura area in an attempt to conceal the crime.

On Tuesday morning, local residents spotted the body lying near a barbed-wire fence in the field and immediately alerted the police. A police team reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.Based on the initial investigation, police have registered a murder case against the victim’s family members under charges related to honour killing and launched a detailed investigation.

Authorities are collecting evidence and recording statements to establish the sequence of events. No arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.

The incident has reignited concerns over honour-based crimes, where individuals become victims of violence for choosing their own life partners against family or community wishes.

Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
