Third-Year Computer Science Student from Puri Allegedly Fell from Fifth Floor; Investigation Underway

Guwahati, Assam: A tragic incident has shocked the academic community after a third-year BTech student of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati was found dead on the institute’s campus on Sunday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a native of Puri.

According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 2:30 pm, when the student allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of a building inside the campus. He was rushed for help, but was declared dead.

Police have launched an investigation and are currently treating the case as a suspected suicide, while the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.Ritesh Raj Singh was pursuing Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and was residing in the Brahmaputra Hostel at IIT Guwahati.

Friends and faculty members described him as an exceptionally talented and dedicated student. Initial findings reveal that he had recently secured a prestigious internship with Goldman Sachs, a significant achievement that reflected his academic excellence.

He was also serving as the Competitive Programming Head of the Coding Club at IIT Guwahati and was widely respected among his peers for his technical skills, leadership, and contributions to the student community.

In an official statement, IIT Guwahati said, “The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter.”

Following the incident, Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, sent an email to students informing them about the unfortunate demise of their batchmate and expressing condolences to the bereaved family.

The sudden loss of a bright young student has left the campus in deep mourning. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed before drawing conclusions.
