What began as a night of jubilation for Mexican football fans ended in heartbreak after two people lost their lives during massive World Cup celebrations in Mexico City.

According to local health authorities, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman died of suffocation after thousands of supporters flooded the streets to celebrate Mexico’s 2-0 FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 victory over Ecuador. The tragic incident took place near the iconic Angel of Independence monument, at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster streets.

Officials said emergency responders rushed to the scene and carried out advanced resuscitation efforts. However, both victims could not be revived. Authorities later confirmed suffocation as the cause of death.

The celebrations followed a historic night for the co-host nation. Mexico secured a commanding 2-0 win over Ecuador to book a place in the Round of 16, ending a decades-long wait for a World Cup knockout-stage victory. The triumph marked El Tri’s first knockout win since 1986, while also ending an unwanted streak of eight consecutive eliminations in the World Cup knockout rounds.

The match itself was delayed by nearly an hour due to heavy rain and lightning, but Mexico showed resilience once play began. Julian Quinones opened the scoring by capitalising on a defensive error, before Raul Jimenez doubled the lead later in the first half. Mexico maintained control throughout the contest, extending their unbeaten run and showcasing a disciplined defensive display.

While the victory will be remembered as a landmark sporting achievement, the celebrations were overshadowed by the loss of two lives. The incident has prompted renewed concerns over crowd management and public safety during large-scale sporting celebrations, reminding fans and authorities alike that moments of national joy must also be matched with effective safety measures.
