Germany’s FIFA World Cup 2026 dream ended in dramatic fashion after a heartbreaking Round of 32 defeat to Paraguay, with legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn saying the exit proved one timeless lesson—talent alone cannot win the World Cup.

The four-time champions suffered their first-ever FIFA World Cup elimination via a penalty shootout, losing 5-3 after a tense 1-1 draw. Germany thought they had sealed victory in extra time when Jonathan Tah headed home, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for a foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The match eventually went to penalties, where Paraguay held their nerve to send Germany packing.

The defeat also marked the end of an era, as iconic goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced his retirement from international football. Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history, Neuer played a defining role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph and leaves behind a remarkable legacy.

Speaking as part of ZEE5’s FIFA World Cup 2026 expert panel, Kahn praised Germany’s progress under coach Julian Nagelsmann, highlighting the team’s tactical flexibility and clear identity. However, he admitted that Germany still trails football powerhouses like France and Spain in overall quality.

Kahn stressed that success in the knockout rounds depends on far more than individual brilliance. “Football is not only about talent. It is about building team spirit, handling pressure, and staying united when every mistake can end your tournament,” he said.

The German legend also spoke warmly about football’s growing popularity in India, saying he is always inspired by the passion and knowledge of Indian fans.

While Germany’s campaign ended in disappointment, Kahn believes the team has a strong foundation for the future. With a new generation emerging and lessons learned from this painful exit, the focus now shifts to rebuilding—while the football world salutes Manuel Neuer, whose legendary international career closes as one of Germany’s greatest ever.
