Ramban, J&K : A suspicious SUV ignored orders to stop at a security checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district during the early hours of Friday, forcing police personnel to open fire while attempting to intercept the vehicle, officials said.
According to officials, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when the SUV was travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu. Security personnel stationed at the Chanderkote checkpoint signalled the vehicle to halt, but the driver accelerated and fled instead
Police fired three rounds in an effort to stop the escaping vehicle, but it continued towards the Nashri area. Following the incident, a large-scale search operation involving the district police, the CRPF and the Army was launched to trace the vehicle and its occupant.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban, Arun Gupta, said the suspicious Scorpio was later recovered and seized near Dalwas. He added that an investigation has been initiated and further details will be released as the probe progresses.
Officials said security forces have strengthened search operations across the area, while investigators are examining how the vehicle managed to bypass the checkpoint and the reasons behind the driver’s actions.
