Indian-Origin NASA Astronaut Steps Into the Void as ISS Witnesses a Historic Milestone

New Delhi : A proud new chapter has been added to the story of human space exploration as Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon successfully completed his first-ever spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), spending around 6 hours and 27 minutes working in the vastness of space alongside fellow NASA astronaut Jessica Meir.

The landmark mission saw the two astronauts venture outside the orbiting laboratory, around 400 kilometres above Earth, to carry out critical work aimed at strengthening the station’s power infrastructure and preparing it for the installation of new International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays (IROSA).

Emerging from the Quest airlock, Menon and Meir worked on the station’s 3B power channel, installing essential hardware that will support future solar-array upgrades and help provide additional electricity to the ISS. The additional power generated by the upgraded solar arrays is crucial for supporting scientific experiments, computers, life-support systems and other vital equipment aboard the space station.

For Menon, the mission marked a particularly significant moment in his journey from medicine and aerospace operations to becoming a spacewalker. Selected by NASA as part of its astronaut class in 2021 and beginning his astronaut duties in 2022, Menon previously worked as a flight surgeon and was also part of the medical team supporting SpaceX’s first crewed spaceflight mission.

In June 2026, he embarked on his first ISS mission as part of Expedition 75, taking on the role of flight engineer. His first spacewalk now adds another remarkable achievement to that journey. For Meir, the operation marked her sixth spacewalk, bringing together two astronauts with different experiences but a shared mission to maintain and upgrade humanity’s orbiting laboratory.

The spacewalk was also recorded as the 281st spacewalk associated with the International Space Station, highlighting the decades of extraordinary human effort that have gone into maintaining the station since continuous operations began in 2000.

The work carried out by Menon and Meir is part of a broader series of maintenance and upgrade activities planned for the ISS, with additional spacewalks scheduled later in August to work on communications equipment, power cables, data systems and docking-related hardware.

Beyond the technical significance of the mission, Menon’s achievement carries a powerful symbolic message for millions watching from Earth. From the quiet classrooms and hospitals of Earth to the breathtaking darkness beyond our planet.
