Kolkata : A Congress leader and his 24-year-old son were killed in a late-night attack in West Bengal’s Nadia district, triggering tension in the area and raising fresh concerns over political violence.
Anisur Rahman, 50, a member of the Bengal Congress Committee and general secretary of the Nadia District Congress, was travelling with his son Abu Sufiyan when their vehicle was allegedly intercepted near the Nagadi railway gate on Saturday night.
According to reports, unidentified attackers opened fire and also assaulted the two with sharp weapons. Both Rahman and his son reportedly died at the scene.
Following the incident, police launched a probe and formed multiple teams to track down those responsible. Investigators are also working to establish the motive behind the attack.
Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the killings and called for an impartial investigation. He said the incident raised serious questions about law and order and the safety of people involved in political activity.
Rahman was reportedly active in Congress organisational work in the Nakashipara area and was known locally for his involvement with the party.
With the attackers still being traced, the incident has once again brought the issue of political violence and public safety in West Bengal into focus. Authorities are expected to determine the circumstances and motive behind the double killing as the investigation progresses.
