New Delhi : A meeting took place in the Russian capital, Moscow, this week that caused a stir across many nations as news of it spread. US CIA Director John Ratcliffe personally traveled to Russia.

Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s foreign intelligence agency (SVR), stated on Thursday that a working-level meeting had taken place between the two.

Discussions focused on sensitive issues concerning the intelligence agencies of both nations. However, Naryshkin noted that such meetings are not unusual.

The war in Ukraine is ongoing, and peace efforts between the US and Iran have stalled. Against this backdrop, the CIA chief’s visit to Moscow raises several questions. US President Donald Trump described the visit as somewhat routine. The Kremlin has remained silent regarding the details of this secret meeting.

Meanwhile, citing sources, US media reports suggest that Ratcliffe traveled to Russia carrying a special message from Trump. He reportedly issued a clear warning to Russia against attacking any NATO member state. However, neither Washington nor Moscow has confirmed this.

There has been no official statement from either side regarding the specifics. According to Naryshkin, the two chiefs discussed issues falling within the purview of their respective agencies; as these matters are sensitive, no further details were disclosed.

Relations between Russia and the US have long been strained, a tension further exacerbated by the Ukraine war. Consequently, the direct meeting between the intelligence chiefs has come as a surprise to many.

Trump downplayed the significance of the meeting, describing it as “semi-routine.” The Kremlin, too, has remained tight-lipped on the matter. Naryshkin merely stated that the meeting took place and that this is not unusual; everything else remains a matter of speculation.
