Kolkata : A fresh spell of monsoon fury has gripped West Bengal as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensified, triggering widespread rainfall and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings across the state.
The weather system was located near the Odisha–West Bengal coast on Sunday morning, close to Balasore and Digha, and is expected to move west-northwest before crossing the north Odisha coast within the next 24 hours. Although it is likely to weaken after making landfall, its impact will continue to fuel heavy showers and thunderstorms across Bengal through the week.
South Bengal’s coastal and western districts are expected to witness the heaviest rainfall on Sunday and Monday, while North Bengal is likely to see rainfall intensify from Monday onwards.
For Kolkata, the IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain and thundershowers over the next 24 hours. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 30°C, with the minimum settling near 25°C. On Saturday, Alipore recorded a maximum temperature of 33°C and a minimum of 27.4°C, both slightly above normal.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious as thunderstorms, gusty winds and waterlogging may disrupt normal life in several parts of the state over the next few days.
