Mumbai : A late-night building collapse in Mumbai’s Mankhurd claimed six lives, including four women, after a section of a three-storey chawl came crashing down, trapping residents under the debris. Rescue teams are continuing search operations amid fears that more people could still be buried beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred around 8.30 pm on Saturday in Janta Nagar, Mankhurd, when a portion of the G+3 chawl suddenly collapsed, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The impact of the collapse also brought down two to three adjoining houses in Chawl No. 5, leaving several residents trapped.
Emergency response teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the BMC, and the police rushed to the spot and launched an intensive rescue operation. Officials confirmed that six people, including four women, lost their lives in the tragedy, while one injured survivor has been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Search and rescue efforts are still underway to ensure no one remains trapped beneath the debris. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collapse, and an investigation has been initiated.
The incident comes amid continued heavy monsoon rains in Mumbai, which have raised concerns over the structural safety of old and dilapidated buildings across the city. Officials are expected to conduct a detailed assessment once rescue operations are completed.
