New Delhi : Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to leave Parliament, announcing that he will step down as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras, ending his decade-long association with the London constituency.
Starmer said he would now turn his attention to international affairs, defence, security, trade and technology, particularly as the global landscape continues to change rapidly.
The announcement comes after Starmer resigned as UK prime minister and Labour Party leader on June 22. He had represented Holborn and St Pancras since 2015 and led Labour into government following its victory in the 2024 general election.
His decision to leave the Commons is expected to trigger a by-election in the constituency, giving voters the opportunity to elect a new representative.
Starmer’s departure marks a significant new chapter in his political career. Having moved from opposition leader to prime minister and now away from frontline parliamentary politics, he says his focus will increasingly shift towards international issues and emerging challenges in defence, security, trade and technology.
With his resignation as MP, Starmer will also become a former prime minister without a seat in the House of Commons, bringing his parliamentary career to a close.
