New Delhi : The political temperature is set to rise across India as the countdown to the 2027 Assembly elections begins, with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur expected to witness a crucial electoral battle next year. These five states are likely to play a significant role in shaping the political narrative ahead, with major parties expected to intensify their organisational activities, public outreach and campaign preparations in the coming months.
According to the available timeline, the Manipur Assembly’s term is scheduled to end on March 13, 2027, followed by Goa on March 14, Punjab on March 16 and Uttarakhand on March 28, while the term of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is due to end on May 22, 2027. Since all five states also went to the polls during the same election cycle in 2022, the 2027 elections are expected to follow a broadly similar timeline, with voting likely to be conducted around February,March 2027, subject to the final schedule announced by the Election Commission.
The poll preparations have already gained momentum, with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls reportedly completed in three of the poll-bound states and continuing in the remaining two. Meanwhile, the census-related process has progressed in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa, while the first phase of the exercise in Manipur has been kept on hold.
With electoral roll revision, administrative preparations and political mobilisation gathering pace, parties are expected to begin sharpening their strategies, selecting potential candidates and focusing on key regional and national issues.
The 2027 polls will be particularly significant in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state and a major political battleground, while Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur could also witness intense contests shaped by local issues, governance, development and political alliances.
Although the exact dates are yet to be announced, the approaching deadlines of the state Assemblies mean that preparations are likely to accelerate rapidly. If the elections are held within the expected February–March window, the coming months could witness a major escalation in political activity as parties seek to strengthen their voter base and build momentum ahead of the crucial five-state electoral showdown.
