2029 Mission Begins ? Rahul Gandhi Plans Major Organisational Shake-Up

New Delhi : A major organisational reset could be taking shape inside the Congress as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi moves to build a younger, more performance-driven leadership team with an eye on the party’s future political battles and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

According to the information provided, the Congress is currently undertaking a selection process for new national secretaries of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), with Rahul Gandhi himself reportedly interviewing aspiring leaders and directly assessing their organisational capabilities, grassroots activity and commitment to the party.

Around 120 young leaders from different states are understood to have been shortlisted for the process, with their ground-level performance, ability to mobilise workers, organisational experience and involvement in party activities being closely evaluated.

The proposed exercise is being seen as an indication of a broader attempt to move the Congress away from a traditional, recommendation-driven organisational structure towards a more performance-oriented and task-focused model, where leaders entrusted with state responsibilities could be expected to deliver measurable organisational results within defined timelines.

Reports suggest that more than 60 per cent of the proposed secretary-level appointments could comprise new and younger faces, particularly leaders who have been active in the party’s student and youth wings, grassroots campaigns, public movements and social-media outreach. The emphasis appears to be on identifying leaders who are willing to work on the ground as well as engage with voters and supporters in the rapidly changing digital political landscape.

The move could also provide a pathway for a new generation of Congress leaders to enter the party’s national organisational structure, potentially strengthening its second line of leadership ahead of crucial electoral contests.

Political observers see the exercise as part of a larger effort to create a younger, more energetic and accountable political machinery, with leaders expected to take ownership of specific states and organisational assignments rather than merely holding positions. If implemented on the scale being discussed, the restructuring could mark a significant shift in how the Congress identifies and promotes organisational talent, placing greater emphasis on performance, grassroots connect and political activism rather than seniority or political recommendations.

With several assembly elections ahead and the 2029 general election already emerging as a long-term political target, Rahul Gandhi’s reported push for a new-generation organisational team could become one of the most significant internal changes in the Congress in the coming years. The proposed ‘future team’ could ultimately determine how effectively the party expands its grassroots network, strengthens its state units and prepares a new generation of leaders for the political battles ahead.
